Dancing with Diabetes
I will dance in this new body.
On the cusp of a new year, I made this promise in the mirror this morning, “Whatever you do today, body, I love you.”
If any of you are reading this with Type 1 diabetes, I see you. Because this is more difficult than I expected. And it’s scary and uncomfortable.
This year, we moved into a house- not just any house either- our dream house! Before we had any instruments in it, I danced in our Music Room. I was so excited, I danced till I dropped. I didn’t know that could happen. And I forgot what to do.
Dancing has been in my life since I can remember. I’ve danced at every age, and even through pregnancy (a very big pregnancy!). I never worried about how my body used energy, because it was always there. But after that, worry became my daily routine.
I want to dance. Full out, without worry. I want to dance so much that I am sweating and happy and full of that life force that brings everything into perspective while opening up a whole world of possibilities.
I want to dance from a place of gratitude, from ecstasy, from what I know and what I have yet to discover. I want to feed my soul with this expression- this part of me waiting to come home.
How do I get there from here?
With arms outstretched.
“Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.” - Rainer Maria Rilke
And if any of you are looking for inspiration, I highly recommend "The Sugarless Plum" by New York City Ballet soloist Zippora Karz.
