T1D Mommy

Published on

People kept saying "It takes a year."

When I was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, I was eager to get to the "life back to normal" part. I remember returning from a specific walk through 45 minutes of angry tears saying, "Okay, I went through Anger. What's next?"

Well, as it turned out, there was a lot more to unpack than needles and juice. And I am still educating myself coming up on the anniversaries around my diagnosis, the ER trip, and the day my kidneys hurt so badly I just held my kids and rocked back and forth.

I haven't hit the year mark yet, but when it comes this July, there will be balloons.

If you're reading this and have a similar story, believe it takes time. Find your reason, find your team.

Type 1 Mommy

Being a Type 1 Mommy means your daughters know your 9:30 alarm is for juice. They also know the Capri Suns are for you only and not to offer them to the neighbors.

Being a Type 1 Mommy means you are so exhausted at the end of the day you can't be sure if it's the diabetes or a bad personality.

Being a Type 1 Mommy means you're late for drop-off because you're literally dropping, and sometimes texting from the parking lot See you in 15!

Being a Type 1 Mommy means eating dinner while you're making dinner. Sure, lasagna sounded better but yours is over bread.

Being a Type 1 Mommy means struggling out of your winter coat to scan your CGM sensor while your family sleds down the hill.

Being a Type 1 Mommy means struggling out of your cardigan when it's too friggin' hot to wear one. Scanning your CGM sensor and pulling crackers from your purse.

Being a Type 1 Mommy means you have kids. Being a Type 1 Mommy means working harder to be there. Being a Type 1 Mommy means honesty, apologies, and restarts (esp. at bedtime).

Being a Type 1 Mommy means having all the reasons, sharing all the stories, and being grateful every day.

You can do this!

HUGS,

Ashley

Thank you for sharing, Ashley! I pray Joey can find the strength to be as open about his T1D as you are some day! 💜
